What makes a sudoku easy

Not the number of empty cells. A well-known example proves the point: there is a famous puzzle with just 17 clues — the theoretical minimum for a sudoku to have a unique solution — that falls entirely to the most basic techniques. Few clues do not mean a hard puzzle.

That's why difficulty works differently here. An internal solver works through every puzzle the way a person would, recording which logical steps it actually needs. If naked singles and hidden singles are enough, the puzzle is easy. If anything more is required, it moves up a tier.

The only techniques you need: naked and hidden singles

A naked single is the most direct deduction there is: a cell where only one value remains possible, because the other eight already appear in its row, column or box. A hidden single is its mirror image: somewhere in a row, column or box, there's a value that fits in only one cell — even if that cell seems to have several candidates.

The entire easy level rests on these two observations, applied patiently. No interlocking patterns, no chains: just a careful, methodical read of the grid.

When to move up to medium
